When Do You Suggest We Decorate for Christmas?

Question:

What suggestions do you have for how to do the Christmas season? When do we put lights up, put tree up, hand ornaments, etc.?

Answer:

There are no church rules or regulations on decorating your own home. Christmas decorations can go up at any time and come down at any time, or not come down at all.

My only personal recommendation to families is to not take down the Christmas decorations too soon. I personally recommend leaving them up through the entire liturgical season of Christmas.

I always say my favorite time of Christmas is December 26th. I love the lack of busyness compared to the pre-Christmas sales and parties. The week or two after December 25th is a wonderfully calm time to truly appreciate the gift of our savior and the miracle of the incarnation. In Christmas carols and television specials we profess to want the peace of Christmas all year round yet so many of us pack it all away ASAP. In all the hub bub in the run up to Christmas how much time do we really have to absorb and reflect on the great mystery that God became man?

Decorate when and how you feel comfortable and enjoy. My only suggestion is to not pack away the awe with the decorations.
