Why “Catholic” Isn’t Capitalized in the Apostles’ Creed

Question:

Should "catholic" in the Apostles' Creed be capitalized?

Answer:

The word catholic comes from the Greek katholikos, which means universal, wide ranging, whole.

When we capitalize the word, we are referring specifically to the Catholic Church. When we use the lowercase we are describing an attribute of the Church. In the Creed, the word catholic is used among other adjectives and is used in the same manner and thus it is lowercase.
