Question:
When my new parish celebrates a Mass focused on the children present, the celebrant uses a Eucharist prayer I have not heard before.
Answer:
At Mass, we are usually used to the four main Eucharistic Prayers. However, there are other approved Eucharistic prayers. There are a couple of possibilities here.
- The celebrant was using the Eucharistic Prayers for Various Needs or the Eucharistic Prayers for Reconciliation. Both contain wording that might be more appropriate for children or the topic addressed at the Mass. These are found in the Roman Missal.
- The USCCB has also approved Eucharistic Prayers for Mass with Children. These follow the main Eucharistic Prayers but are simplified in wording and have options for additional dialogue. These are found in a separate booklet from the Roman Missal.
