The Meaning of Mary’s Name

Rebellion is but one possible meaning of the Hebrew name Miriam (Mary). The exact meaning of the name is not known for sure; in fact, we are not even sure from which language the name’s root derives. The more commonly thought meaning is from the Hebrew root mr, which means bitterness.
