Question:
Is it appropriate for the priest to invite the whole congregation into the sanctuary to stand around the altar during the consecration?
Answer:
No, there is nothing in the liturgical documents that would suggest this is an acceptable practice. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal never even hints at such a possibility. In fact, it states that the extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion should not approach the altar until the priest has received communion (162).
