Sins Against Marriage

Question:

What are the sins against marriage?

Answer:

The Church has not compiled an exhaustive list of sins against marriage.  What we do know is that the Church teaches there are certain goods of marriage that must be entered into knowingly and freely.  They are:

  • indissolubility (bonum sacramenti)
  • fidelity (bonum fidei)
  • openness to life (bonum prolis)
  • good of the spouses (bonum coniugum)

Obvious sins, but not an exhaustive list, against these goods of marriage would be:

  • polygamy
  • adultery
  • any form of abuse
  • abandonment
  • incest
  • abortion
  • refusal to have children
  • forced marraige
  • marriage via deception
  • lust
  • acting directly against procreation
