Question:
My now non-practicing, but raised Catholic, son was 18 when he married an agnostic 18 year old girl at our town hall. Is his marriage invalid?
Answer:
All who are baptized Catholic or received into the Church, even if non-practicing, are required to be married in the Catholic Church (canons 1108 §1 and 1117 ). Because your son was, presumably, baptized Catholic he is required to be married in the Church and thus his town hall marriage is invalid.
