Question:
How can the beloved disciple be thought to have taken the Virgin Mary “as his own”, when in reality he merely took her “into his home"?
Answer:
When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home. (John 19:26-27)
The beloved disciple took Mary more than into his physical house, he was instructed by Jesus to treat her as his mother and she to treat him as her son. It is implied in this passage that the beloved disciple cared for Mary to the end of her earthly life as he would have cared for his own mother.
