Married More Than Once and Wanting to Convert

Question:

I have been married more than once. Can I convert to Catholicism?

Answer:

Whether the Church can receive a convert depends upon the convert’s current marital situation.

If you are currently married and your ex-spouse is still living, then you would need to have the first marriage annulled before the Church could accept your second marriage as valid.

If you are currently married and your ex-spouse is deceased, then your current marriage is considered valid and you are free to be received into the Church.

If you are not currently married (whether through divorces or death), then you are free to be received into the Church.
