Question:
Is it okay to have photographers and videographers at Mass? If yes, why? Shouldn’t everyone’s focus at Mass be God?
Answer:
Under normal circumstances, photographers and videographers would be a distraction to the faithful. However, there are some occasions (e.g., weddings, confirmations, First Communions) where their presence actually helps the faithful focus on the Mass. On those special occasions where people would want to take their own photos and videos, the presence of a professional means that everyone can obtain the photos and videos they want later and can focus their attention on the sacred actions taking place. A single person or a very small number of persons who know how to be unobtrusive is more conducive to a prayerful atmosphere than a multitude of people clamoring for camera angles and flashes going off.
