Question:
I read an article that states that not all countries are permitted to receive Communion in the hand. Is this true?
Answer:
The universal norm for the Church is communion on the tongue. National episcopal conferences have applied for and received approval to permit communion in the hand, and then it is up to the individual bishops of the dioceses to permit the practice. While this approval was sought by most episcopal conferences throughout the world, it was not sought by all. Some nations (e.g., Sri Lanka) and dioceses (e.g., Oruro, Bolivia) have only the option of receiving Communion on the tongue.
