Question:
Why did John the Baptist send his disciples to question Jesus if he was the messiah or if they should look for another?
Answer:
The traditional thought on this matter is that John the Baptist was essentially being coy with his disciples. They believe that John never doubted and sent his disciples to Jesus so that they might see first hand his miracles, hear his teachings, and be confident to follow Jesus after John’s death.
In this interpretation it was perhaps John the Baptist’s disciples (and not John himself) who doubted so he basically said to them, “Go ask him yourself” with the expectation that they would be convinced once they saw and talked to Jesus.
