Can There Be a Purple Shroud on the Altar Cross?

Question:

When is it appropriate to use purple shroud on the cross on the altar?

Answer:

A cross that is actually on the altar should be a crucifix (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 308; USCCB, Built on Living Stones, The Cross §91).

No mention is made of decorating that cross with anything; therefore if a cross is on the altar it is to be a crucifix and nothing more.
