Question:
I am a Catholic married to divorced non-Catholic but my husband’s ex-wife was divorced from another before they married. Can my marriage be validated by the church?
Answer:
You will need to sit down with your local parish priest to flesh out all the details. But it does appear that it is possible for your marriage to be validated in the church. If your husband’s ex-wife was divorced (and her ex was still alive at the time of her marriage to your husband) then that marriage could be declared null on the grounds that the bride had a prior marriage bond. I stress “could be” because the details will be important when making a definitive judgment. But essentially a tribunal could declare that your husband’s prior marriage was never valid because the bride had a valid marriage bond to another man.
