Question:
Is it permissible for a Catholic married to a Muslim to participate in Ramadan to support his spouse?
Answer:
Catholics are free to undertake spiritual fasting outside of the times required by the Church. A Catholic who is married to a Muslim may fast during along with his or her spouse provided that the spirituality that is used by the Christian spouse during this fast is Christian in nature.
Ramadan also includes increasing one’s charitable actions which is always a good thing for a Christian to consider.
The only issue would be that Ramadan also has its own Islamic prayers and readings from the Quran which would be problematic for a Christian to participate in.
As long as the Catholic only participates in the actions of Ramadan that overlap with Christian spirituality then there is no problem.
