Arranged Marriage Isn’t Sinful—Per Se

Question:

Is arranged marriage a sin? Two people answer covenant questions and are perhaps guilty of lying?

Answer:

Arranged marriage, in and of itself, is not sinful if both parties enter into it freely and without reservation. Arranged marriage was common in most parts of the world until the last few centuries and still exists in some cultures.

The essence of marriage is the consent of the two spouses. If the spouses freely consent to commit to each other in a permanent, exclusive, life giving relationship till death do them part, then the arranged marriage would indeed be valid.

If, however, one of the parties to the marriage did not freely choose to enter into the arranged marriage or was coerced, the marriage would not be valid. If someone freely entered an arranged marriage but lacked one of the essential elements listed above, it would be invalid the same as any other marriage that lacked an essential element.
