Kids’ Show: Why Did God Make the World?

On the kids-only edition of Catholic Answers Live, Fr. Hugh Barbour explains to a six-year-old why God’s supreme goodness led him to create the world.

Transcript:

Host: Let’s go to Catherine, six years old, in North Dakota. Catherine, welcome to Catholic Answers Live.

Caller: Hi.

Fr. Hugh: Hello Catherine.

Host: How are you?

Caller: Good.

Host: Okay Catherine, what’s your question for Fr. Hugh?

Caller: Why did God make the world?

Fr. Hugh: Oh, okay. Well, because He…you know, when you have something good, like if you had a package of M&Ms—do you know M&Ms, Catherine? Mm-hmm. Okay. So if you had some chocolate candy, would you just sit there and eat it all by yourself, or would you give it to people around you and share it with them?

Caller: I would share it with them.

Fr. Hugh: Right, exactly. Exactly. So God, who is so good, so completely good, that he could not possibly just keep it all to himself, He would share it with somebody else. And so why did God make the world? Because he’s so extra-good that He gives His goodness to others. Just like if you have something good, you’d want to share it. You wouldn’t want to keep it just to yourself. And that’s why God made the world.

Host: Does that make sense, Catherine?

Caller: Mm-hmm.

Fr. Hugh: Good, okay. Well, God bless you, Catherine.

Host: Wonderful question, thank you for calling.

Fr. Hugh: And share your M&Ms, okay?
