Wrong to Wear a Bare Cross?

Question:

A priest once said that it is wrong to wear a bare cross because many criminals have died on a cross. He said only a crucifix is acceptable. Is this true?

Answer:

While Catholics have traditionally venerated crucifixes, there is nothing wrong with wearing a cross as a symbol of Christ’s sacrificial death. Many criminals probably ate bread and drank wine, but that doesn’t make it wrong to receive consecrated bread and wine at Mass. The Christian who wears a cross does not honor the death of everyone who ever died on a cross. He is choosing to honor Jesus’ death, which makes it fitting for him to wear a cross.
