Question:
Why did Nicodemus bring such a large amount of spices to the tomb?
Answer:
As with the sinful woman who anointed the Lord’s feet in the house of Simon, the amount used was not dictated by practical necessity but was a sign of the honor due and given to the Lord himself. Forty pounds were used for the funeral of the Rabbi Gamaliel, so a hundred pounds (or more likely about seventy-five of our pounds) would be a sign of extreme veneration of the person of Jesus. This excess is a sign both of the love of Our Lord’s followers and of his surpassing dignity.
