In short, it’s based on the different numbering of different biblical manuscripts. And yet, despite the different renderings of chapters 2-4 in different Catholic biblical translations, they all cover the same material in the same number of total verses.
For example, the New American Bible (NAB), Jerusalem Bible (JB) and New Jerusalem Bible (NJB) all have 27 verses for chapter 2, five for chapter 3 and 21 for chapter 4, for a total of 53 verses over the three chapters.
And in a differing but complementary way, the Douay Rheims American Edition (DRA) and the Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition (RSVCE) both have 32 verses for chapter 2 and 21 verses for chapter 3 for a total of 53 verses.
And all five of these Catholic biblical translations have 20 verses for chapter 1.
