Question:
What is the timeline between the presentation in the temple and the fleeing to Egypt?
Answer:
After Jesus’ circumcision, which took place on the eighth day following his birth in conformity with Old Covenant law, Mary had to wait several more weeks before her purification concluded. Thus, forty days after Jesus’ birth, Mary and Joseph presented Jesus in the Temple (Luke 2:22-24; see Lev. 12:1-7).
Sometime thereafter the flight to Egypt took place. Because infants under two years old were slaughtered by King Herod in his attempt to kill the Christ Child, it’s possible that Jesus could have been between the ages of one and two at the time of the Epiphany, i.e., when the magi or wise men paid homage to him (see Matt. 2:12-18).
