Question:
Do Catholics believe that both the Bible an the church can speak for God?
Answer:
The Bible is undoubtedly God’s word, but there is also sacred Tradition, which includes the apostles’ orally transmitted teachings that were shared years before any of the New Testament books were written (Acts 2:42), let alone compiled formally into the New Testament.
And whether it’s sacred Tradition or the Bible, we need an authoritative teacher to ensure God’s word is interpreted and taught correctly. Thus, God provides us with his Church (1 Tim. 3:15).
For more on this subject, please see our pamphlet Pillar of Fire, Pillar of Truth, the title for which is taken from 1 Timothy 3:15. In addition, I recommend my recent article on “Pentecost and the Papacy.” We also have various related tracts you can read online.
