Question:
How do I respond to the claim that Catholics focus more on the sacraments than on a personal relationship with Christ?
Answer:
The two do not oppose each other. In fact, a person without a personal relationship with Christ will not be able to appreciate what the sacraments really are. Receiving the body and blood of Christ will not mean much to a person who does not know him. The sacraments are physical signs that impart a spiritual reality. They are not meant for angels, because angels do not have physical bodies. They are designed for the incarnate spirits that are human beings. Ultimately, they are ways in which the Lord embraces us on our human journey.
