Revelation and Our Personal Encounter with God

Question:

What is the relationship between revelation and our personal experience of God?

Answer:

Through our God-given reason, we can come to understand that God exists. However, to encounter God personally, he needs to reveal himself. Throughout salvation history, God has revealed himself in various words and deeds (CCC 69). And he did so definitively through his divine Son, Jesus Christ (CCC 65). In Jesus’ establishing the New Covenant, we are able to encounter him, his Father and the Holy Spirit through the Church Jesus established (Matt. 16:18-19), and particularly in the sacraments, beginning with baptism (Matt. 28:18-20) and especially in the Eucharist (Luke 22:19-20) and Confession (John 20:21-23).
