Peter, the Papacy, and St. Paul’s Epistles

Question:

Why is the Pope not mentioned or Peter given special honor in Paul's epistles?

Answer:

Actually, St. Paul does refer to St. Peter in his epistles. For example, in Letter to the Galatians, Paul writes:

Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas, and remained with him fifteen days. 19 But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord’s brother. 20 (In what I am writing to you, before God, I do not lie! (Galatians 1:18-20).

“Cephas” is the Grecized form of St. Peter’s name (John 1:42) and illustrates that Peter is the “rock” upon which Jesus built his Church.

What matters most, of course, is what Jesus said and did regarding St. Peter and the papacy. In this regard, see our article “Pentecost and the Papacy.”
