Question:
Answer:
Yes, properly understood they did, even if the prophets themselves might not have fully understood their prophecies when they received and proclaimed them.
In this light, as St. Augustine famously proclaimed, “The New Testament lies hidden in the Old and the Old Testament is unveiled in the New.” So Isaiah 7:14, in which a young maiden or virgin gives birth to a son, whose name will be Emmanuel (“God is with us”), anticipates the Incarnation of Jesus (Matt. 1:18-23; Luke 1:26-38).
Similarly, there is Isaiah 9:6:
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government will be upon his shoulder,
and his name will be called
“Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
This passage also anticipates the Incarnation, with the fulfillment being seen in the aforementioned Infancy narratives of Matthew 2 and Luke 1, as well as in John 1:1-3 and John 3:16-17.
