Okay to Purchase Products from a Chinese Company?

Question:

Is it morally okay to buy a product made by a Chinese owned company ?

Answer:

Just because a product is made in China should not be a reason to avoid its purchase. The Chinese people are made in God’s image and likeness (Gen. 1:26-27) and thus have a right to make a living, including having the opportunity to sell it to others outside their country.

In addition, many products sold by U.S. companies are themselves made or assembled in China, so it’d be difficult to avoid any and all purchases that have a Chinese manufacturing connection.

Some might argue that American companies, such as in the manufacturing sector, are hurt by Chinese imports, and yet the Chinese themselves are not responsible for U.S. companies’ exporting certain aspects of their operations to China, India and other countries. As a response, Americans can encourage their government to give business incentives for companies to remain in or return to the United States re: parts of their operations.

If one is aware of certain American companies whose Chinese collaborators have unsafe or other problematic manufacturing centers, they can write to these companies and back up their words with their purchases to bring about better working conditions for the Chinese.
