Must Altar Servers Be Catholic?

Question:

Do you have to be Catholic to be an altar server?

Answer:

Yes, an altar server normally is one who is baptized and can receive Holy Communion. Liturgical roles are reserved for those who are in communion with the Catholic Church. Perhaps an exception can be made for a baptized Christian at a funeral or wedding of a Catholic relative, but this would evidently not be an habitual practice.
