Question:
Answer:
Yes, Catholics may listen to contemporary Christian music, including as an aid for prayer. However, you mention regular prayer. We should regularly take some quiet time in our prayer, so that we can better listen and hear God (see 1 Kings 19:11-13). This would not necessarily preclude our regularly listening to contemporary Christian music.
A couple of disclaimers. We should be mindful of avoiding any contemporary Christian music whose lyrics conflict with Catholic doctrine. In addition, we should be open to cultivating an interest in traditional Christian music, i.e., the timeless classic hymns that are sung in the great cathedrals of the world, and in parishes globally as well, and whose singing is made grander by the accompaniment of an accomplished organist. As Vatican II reminds us, the pipe organ has pride of place among instruments used in the Liturgy/Mass (Sacrosanctium Concilium [Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy] 120).
