Question:
Is Mary a part of God because she is the Mother of God?
Answer:
God is the infinite, eternal, and unchanging act of being itself. When God became man in the person of Jesus Christ, nothing about the divine person of the Son or his fully divine nature changed. The Son assumed a human nature, which was made possible by the participation of Mary, who conceived and bore the Son in her womb. Mary conceived and gave birth to God the Son, thus making her the mother of God, but she did not change God’s divine nature or his identity as a divine person, and so she is not a “part of God.”
