Married to a Previously Married Man, Yet a Catholic Convert?

Question:

My mother married a previously married man, who was married by a protestant minister. Then she converted to Catholicism. Is she eligible for communion? Otherwise, we can’t find valid reason for annulment of his previous marriage.

Answer:

You say that you, your mother and her civilly married spouse can’t find a valid reason for an annulment, and yet you say she has converted to Catholicism. However, these issues are typically addressed with and resolved during the RCIA process, i.e., before one enters into full communion with the Catholic Church.

These issues never came up during the RCIA process? In addition, in that light, has your mother attempted to go through the annulment process in her diocese?

In short, the Church has a processes for resolving these matters, and your mother needs to go through them, seeking out the help of her local parish and the diocesan marriage tribunal.
