Question:
Answer:
In terms of teaching guidance, the Holy Spirit, also known as the Paraclete (“Advocate”), gave special oversight to the first apostles (John 14:25-26; 16:13), with Peter (the first Pope) as their head (Matt. 16:18; see Mt. 28:18-20; Acts 2:42; CCC 85-87). Because the Church’s mission continues, this special guidance continues with the Successors of St. Peter and those apostolic successors (bishops) in union with him.
In a more general sense, the Holy Spirit is for everyone, as all who receive baptism become temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 6:19-20; CCC 1262ff.). And the Holy Spirit guides Christians in giving witness to God (Matt. 10:19-20). And all humanity is called to the status of adopted sons and daughters of God, beginning in baptism (1 Tim. 2:4; 2 Pet. 3:9).
