Question:
Answer:
While we will refrain from encouraging bungee jumping, it is not an intrinsically immoral form of entertainment. Not taking proper precautions and still jumping would be wrong, because then would one be deliberately putting oneself in the way of serious harm.
By way of comparison, the Church teaches that “those incur grave guilt who, by drunkenness or a love of speed, endanger their own and others’ safety on the road, at sea, or in the air” (CCC 2290). Does that mean auto racing is immoral? No, because the drivers who compete are highly trained, and they and their teams take their various other precautions, even though risk cannot be entirely removed from the competition.
Similarly, when proper precautions are taken, fatalities in bungee jumping are rare.
