How to Best Learn About the Mass

Question:

I’m interested in learning everything I can about the Mass. Can you recommend a good source?

Answer:

The two best sources to begin with are a Catholic translation of the Bible, e.g., the RSV Second Catholic Edition from Ignatius Press or the New American Bible used in Masses in the U.S., and the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC), specifically its treatment of the Mass. In its official English translation, the CCC uses the RSV Catholic Edition.

I’d also recommend various Catholic Answers resources, including this tract on the institution of the Mass and Karlo Broussard’s article on the profoundly biblical nature of the Mass.

Regarding books, I would humbly recommend mine on The Biblical Roots of the Mass, Jimmy Akin’s Mass Revisions, which covers recent changes in the liturgy, and Dr. Edward Sri’s A Biblical Walk Through the Mass: Understanding What We Say and Do in the Liturgy.
