How Our Vocation Advances God’s Kingdom

Question:

How does our vocation contribute to God’s love and the kingdom of God?

Answer:

As St. Paul teaches, we are members of the mystical body of Christ, with Christ as the head (Eph. 1:22). We as members of Christ cooperate with him and each other in advancing his kingdom (1 Cor. 12:12-26).

So we have a key part to play in advancing the kingdom. What does that involve? Whatever our particular vocation, there are commonalities, including seeking first God’s kingdom and his righteousness (Matt. 6:33). And understanding properly the often-misused term “love.” Love in a true and thus Christian context is clear, as St. John proclaims: “And this is love, that we follow his commandments” (2 John 6). That means helping others to live those same commandments, beginning with the Ten Commandments, including joyfully sharing about them (1 Pet. 3:15).
