Question:
May Mass be said in a person’s home? When is this not allowed?
Answer:
The Code of Canon Law prescribes:
The Eucharistic celebration is to be carried out in a sacred place, unless in a particular case necessity requires otherwise; in which case the celebration must be in a fitting place (can. 932, emphasis added).
In general, Mass should be celebrated in a place set aside for that purpose (i.e., a sacred place). In situations determined by the local bishop, Mass can be celebrated in another place, such as a home. As long as the Church’s liturgical norms are followed, as well as any prescriptions of the bishop, such a celebration/offering of the Mass is fine. You may wish to contact your diocesan chancery office to learn if your bishop has issued any general guidelines for his diocese on this matter.
