Question:
What is the Church’s stance on ghosts? Are they all demons, or can people be allowed, by the grace of God, to appear after death?
Answer:
Ghosts are disembodied souls. Since only humans have bodies, that means ghosts are souls of deceased human beings. When a person dies, the soul leaves the body. At the resurrection of the dead, souls are rejoined to their bodies; for the just, they will be glorified, body and soul. Any manifestation of a human soul between death and the resurrection of the dead is what we call a ghost.
