Question:
my daughter married a man who was encouraging her to take class a drugs. Can she get an annullment?
Answer:
Consent makes or ratifies a marriage (CCC 1626-28), so marriage tribunals examine whether one or both persons had deficient consent when they exchanged their wedding vows (CCC 1628-29).
Taking an illegal drug and inducing another to do so is certainly morally wrong, but would not necessarily vitiate marital consent in and of itself. It could possibly indicate an inability “to assume the essential obligations of marriage for causes of a psychic nature” (Code of Canon Law, Canon 1095.3).
If your daughter is still married, perhaps this issue could be successfully dealt with through marriage counseling. If your daughter is divorced, ask her to seek the counsel of her diocesan marriage tribunal with the assistance of her parish pastor.
