Drinking Alcohol is Not Intrinsically Evil

Question:

Is Drinking alcohol is a sin? Many of the priests are saying this is a sin; but I found Pope Benedict drinks beer? Why the contradiction?

Answer:

You apparently have received unreliable information on what many Catholic priests believe. The Church teaches that drunkenness, i.e., the abuse of alcohol, is a sin but not moderate consumption (CCC 2290).

People often recreationally drink without sinning, i.e., enjoying the taste and the social exchange that takes place between friends. In the process, the consumption of alcohol can help people relax without their getting drunk. St. Paul also wrote about the medicinal benefits of wine (1 Tim. 5:23).

For more on this subject, see our article on how the Bible doesn’t prohibit drinking alcohol and another on the consumption of alcohol by the faithful.
