“Benedictine Wonder” Comes from “Ora et Labora”

Question:

Where does the Benedictine saying Awake to Wonder come from

Answer:

The idea of Benedictine wonder, and awaking to wonder, comes from St. Benedict himself and his fundamental rule of ora et labora, i.e., prayer and work.

If we are in regular contact with God through our work and in our regular prayer, we will have an increasingly greater understanding of God, ourselves in relation to God, and an appreciation for the wonder and beauty of the rest of creation. This will all lead to an increasing wonder of and gratitude for God and his creation.
