Attending a Jehovah’s Witnesses Service

Question:

Is it OK to attend a Jehovah’s Witnesses service out of curiosity?

Answer:

I would recommend caution. First, anyone not well-formed in the Catholic Faith should not attend, as he might be susceptible to the disinformation the Jehovah’s Witnesses (JWs) put out regularly regarding the Catholic Church. Second, one should be familiar with JW doctrines, and this Catholic Answers tract (“The Distinctive Beliefs of the JWs”), as well this one (“The God of the JWs”), and also this one (“Stumpers for the JWs”), will help in that regard.

If you’ve been invited to a JW Kingdom Hall, the place where their services take place, you’ve probably first met them during a visit to your home. They’re not likely to invite someone who is good at challenging them and their doctrine to one of their services (although they might), and they’re definitely not likely to let you share your Catholic Faith in front of a large group of JWs. And they’re trained not to take materials from others but rather only to hand out their JW materials.

For more on the JWs and their strategies in spreading their beliefs, see this Catholic Answers tract and also this Catholic Answers Magazine article by Jason Evert.
