Mary’s Immaculate Conception

Genesis 3:15

I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.

Catholic Perspective

Genesis 3:15 is known as the Protoevangelium, the “first gospel.” Immediately after the fall, God speaks directly to Satan (the serpent) and announces Satan’s punishment and defeat through “the seed” of a woman who will crush his head.

She is the virgin woman whom the prophet Isaiah said would conceive and bear a son (Isa. 7:14; see also Matt. 1:23); she is Mary, who, being immaculately conceived, did not sin. It was through her consent and her humility as handmaid of the Lord that she gave us Jesus, our redemption.
